SHAPE (Sexual Harassment and Abuse Prevention Education) is a sexual violence prevention collaboration between The Retreat, Safe Center LI, LI Against Domestic Violence, and the Hampton Bays Public Library. The initiative has created a partnership to create sustainable viiolence prevention programs in the community for individuals ages 8 and up.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, “1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced sexual violence involving physical contact at some point in their lives.” SHAPE works to provide several strategies in addressing the problem of sexual violence and create change at the community level. This includes building coalitions among community organizations and using evidence-based education programs designed to change social norms regarding violence.
SHAPE educates students to act for the benefit of others and practice affirmative consent and bystander intervention in order to reduce sexual violence. In partnering with the library, we increase access to resources and programming for all community members.
The partnership allows community members who work with children and youth access to a database of educational materials, free of charge, and the presentation of workshops for children, youth, and adults.
SHAPE is funded through the New York State Department of Health, Health Research Inc.
