The Retreat Shelter
The Retreat Shelter is a secure residence located on the East End of Long Island. Since 1992 it has serviced the special needs of women and their children who are victims of domestic violence.
A warm and inviting home, furnished largely by donation, the Retreat Shelter can accommodate up to six families at a time. There is a common living area and a shared kitchen, where residents plan meals. There are two client computers with internet access, and children can enjoy a newly remodeled play room. The Retreat Shelter is staffed around the clock, there are security cameras, and frequent police patrols are made.
As part of a local, state and national network we provide the immediate necessities: safety, food, clothing and shelter; as well as legal, emotional and practical support. The Retreat enjoys the setting of a caring and generous community and a network has evolved linking us to police departments, hospitals, clinics and the generosity of private and business supporters. We provide the majority of the food for our residents – another reason why donations are invaluable to the Retreat.
