JUNE 2008

June Is All About Art

Artists Against Abuse began over a decade ago, with artists donating their skills to help raise awareness about domestic violence. Since its beginnings in a gallery, the event has grown into one of the premiere events of the summer season. This year, the collection of art, and artists, supporting the Retreat is outstanding.

To get a first hand view of some of the art to be presented, join the Retreat at the Artists Against Abuse Preview Party on Saturday, June 14, 6 – 8 pm, at the Hampton Road Gallery in Southampton. Gallery owner Peter Marcelle has become an integral part of Artists Against Abuse, helping find donations for the auction and now hosting its first pre-party sale. He even has some surprises for art lovers, perhaps a few additional pieces only available on June 14th?

This year’s plate artists include: Peter Dayton, Ronnie Chalif, Giancarlo Impiglia, Howard Kanovitz, James McMullan, Lew Zacks, John Battle, Tulla Booth, Stephanie Brody-Lederman, Steven Romm, Jill Musnicki, Harriet Sawyer, Michael Viera, Michael Paraskevas, Karen Kuglein, Jane Johnson, Grant Haffner and Dallas Ernst.

Among the items that will be auctioned live: a Jack Gerber original, signed prints from Andrew Wyeth and Donald Sultan, an original Dan Rizzie, a limited edition April Gornik print, Bryan Hunt original watercolor, Ross Bleckner print, Tom Judd original, and originals from Kathleen Gilge, Jim Wilcox, Dan Christensen and Jimmy Ernst.

The Retreat’s summer gala, Artists Against Abuse, will be held Saturday, June 21 at the Ross School in East Hampton.  This signature event features a silent auction of specially commissioned hand painted plates, plus a live auction of select original works of art. Proceeds from the event support the Retreat’s domestic violence services.

Stop Abuse

Stop Abuse. It’s a simple statement - one embraced by hundreds of local businesses. Local business owners are posting a simple sticker, with a powerful message – Stop Abuse.

The sad truth is, every year, close to 4 million American women experience a serious assault by someone who said they loved them. Domestic and dating violence is not just physical abuse. It can also be sexual, emotional, economic or psychological abuse. It is actions, or threats of actions, meant to frighten, intimidate, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure or wound someone.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone of any age, race, sexual orientation, religion, gender or socioeconomic background. It can happen to couples who are married, living together or dating.

When speaking with Southampton’s Main Street Barber Shop owner, Ralph about the Retreat’s campaign, he was eager to participate and expressed his belief in the Retreat’s cause, and his knowledge of the need for such a powerful movement.  Immediately placing our Stop Abuse sticker on the mirror, he said he wanted it where all of his clientele would be able to view it.

Additional campaign supporters include but are not limited to Herrick Hardware, Book Hampton, Lighthouse Insurance, Planned Parenthood, Safelite, Chase Bank, Corcoran Group Real Estate, Brents, Walbaums, Brown Harris Stevens, Second Nature Markets and many more.

The Stop Abuse Awareness Campaign is a strong statement from our community. We are here to help families affected by violence. We will no longer be silent.

Everyone has a role in ending domestic violence. If anyone feels they are being abused, or know of someone who is being abused, call the Retreat’s Domestic Violence Hotline, (631) 329-2200. You can also log onto the website at www.theretreatinc.org. There is help available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

To receive a sticker, please call the Retreat’s administration line at (631) 329-4398 or email heather@theretreatinc.org.

Celebrating Women on Mothers Day

Mother's Day is a great day to show all women how much they matter. We love and honor them, now it is time to help defend them.

One in four women will experience abuse at some point in their lives. Our hotline will ring every eight minutes with a call for help from a mother or child. Domestic violence is a very real threat to too many East End families.

Fortunately, families in crisis have a place to turn. For more than 20 years, the Retreat has been providing domestic violence services to families in need. The Retreat has a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter for families, legal advocates and counselors. But our services extend far beyond crisis management. They offer services to help families begin again.

Mother’s Day is the perfect time to learn more about domestic violence and how you can help. Log on to the Retreat’s website for more information, www.theretreatinc.org. Or call the 24 hour hotline at (631) 329-2200.

Educate yourself, get involved or make a donation to the Retreat to honor your mother, a favorite aunt or teacher, or someone else who has made a special impact on your life. A gift that will provide shelter, counseling and advocacy to a battered woman and her children may be the perfect way to celebrate your special someone’s devotion to building the loving, healthy relationships you have enjoyed in your own life.

Please help the Retreat make a difference in the lives of families affected by domestic violence. For more information log on to www.theretreatinc.org or call Jennifer Palmer at (631) 329-4398.
